Surfing, traveling, and environmentalism have always been passions of mine, deeply shaping my journey as a chef. The ocean, in particular, has played a central role in both my life and my businesses. It inspired the name Oshin Oil—a nod to its clean, light scent that evokes memories of Northeast beaches and reflects the way we operate: thoughtful, natural, and intentional. This connection to the sea drives our commitment to protecting it.
How You Can Make a Difference
World Oceans Day-happening June 8th this year- is a great time to remember just how much the ocean gives us—waves to ride, air to breathe, and moments of peace we can’t find anywhere else. But as much as we love it, our oceans are hurting. From plastic pollution to overfishing, they need us to step up. The good news? You don’t have to be a marine scientist or coastal local to make a real impact. Here are five easy ways you can start protecting our oceans today—no wetsuit required.
1. Ditch the Plastic
We’ve all seen the plastic mess washed up on shore or floating out past the break. It’s heartbreaking—and it’s something we can help stop. Swap single-use plastics for reusables: water bottles, coffee mugs, tote bags, and food containers. Say no to plastic straws and utensils. It’s a small shift in your everyday flow, but trust us—every piece of plastic you don’t use is one less that could end up in the lineup.
2. Eat Seafood Responsibly
As ocean lovers, we know it’s all connected. Choosing sustainable seafood helps protect fish populations, reefs, and the local communities that rely on them. Look for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label or use apps that guide you to ocean-safe choices. Steer clear of overfished species or ones with high mercury levels. Respecting the sea means knowing where your food comes from and how it’s caught.
3. Join a Beach Cleanup
There’s something powerful about giving back to the places we play. Whether it’s a big cleanup event or a solo mission after your surf session, picking up trash is one of the most direct ways to protect the ocean. Organizations like Clean Ocean Action host regular beach cleanups, or you can start your own—just grab a bucket and a few friends. Every piece you pick up is one less threat to marine life.
4. Choose Ocean-Friendly Products
From the sunscreen we wear to the soap we use, what we buy eventually ends up in the water. Opt for biodegradable, reef-safe, and non-toxic products with minimal or recycled packaging. Skip anything with microbeads (tiny plastics that slip through filters and into the sea). Supporting brands like Oshin Oil that care about the planet helps shift the tide toward sustainability.
5. Back the Ocean Warriors
There are amazing organizations out there fighting every day to keep our oceans clean, wild, and free. Groups like the Surfrider Foundation and One Percent for the Planet are leading the charge—from policy change to plastic bans to hands-on restoration. Donate, volunteer, or just share their work. Every voice matters. Every dollar counts.
We all have a role to play. As surfers, travelers, and ocean lovers, we feel the pull of the sea in everything we do. Let’s return the favor. Protect what you love. Be the kind of human the ocean would be stoked to have on its side.
